The porcelain is very fine quality -- translucent when held up to the light. We also talked to a local porcelain expert who pointed out that the two finials on the two tops were repaired a very long time ago. This is apparent when inspecting them in person. The cups and saucers are of a very translucent, thin porcelain through which lights passes very easily. They are very delicate and fine.
The tray however is thicker and heavier but we were told that the tray had to be for it to fulfill its function as a tray. We tried to find out more about the artist but learned that there were more than 1,300 painters for Sevres during this period, and that most of them remain unknown to this day.
This set belonged to my grandparents, who were very prominent in the high society political circles in 1930's Washington DC. They were both connoisseurs of fine porcelain and Tiffany art glass, and had amassed a rather large collection of both during their numerous trips to Europe. This is an extraordinarily stunning set. We are eager to see it go to a home where it will be truly appreciated.
