Antique large Kutani teapot with dragon handle high quality Meiji
This massive teapot is 12 ½ inches tall, 11 inches across including the spout and handle and 5 ¾ inches across for the central portion. The teapot was made in Kutani and dates circa 1890. The handle is in the shape of a dragon. The decoration is very good and unique. On one side it has a woman standing on a large vase with a scoop in her hand. There are two other ladies with one holding out her bowl to have it filled. The scene is done in great detail. The other side of the teapot depicts two birds, like pheasants among a group of flowers. There are additional birds and geometric designs covering the teapot. All of the decoration is hand painted and is done in exquisite detail which is remarkable consider the large size of this piece. Surprising the piece is not signed, but certainly Kutani and decorated by one of the master artists of the time.
