Somayaki is known for the blue-green crackling achieved by using an apple ash and sumi-kannyu (crackle) glaze. You can see the inner walls through gold gilded heart-shaped cut-outs on the outer walls. Finally, the gold gilded "hashiri-uma" or galloping horse motif telling the story of the region's ability to breed and train horses. The combination of these three distinctive features combine to create warm, rustic pieces imbued with a sense of history specific to the area in which they were produced.

Please message me if you find anything in error but it is said that the increasing rarity, popularity and value of Somayaki is in part due to the Fukushima earthquake and tsunami which destroyed Somayaki Pottery Works and their kilns. This is hauntingly poetic as many Somayaki pieces feature brush strokes that represent waves.

This beautiful Somayaki pottery lot was found at a lovely Japanese family's estate sale. The lot is in overall very good vintage condition with some of the gold gild showing wear.
