Antique Hertel Jacob Bavaria Porcelain Silver Overlay Coffee and Tea Set 39pc

  

This lovely tea set was made by Hertel Jacob, I believe in the 1930s. The porcelain is a creamy ivory color that beautifully sets off the overlay decoration. The pieces recall the earlier Victorian Period in the curving shapes and ornate scrolls.

The overlay feels like an Art Deco interpretation of the Aesthetic style with its sweetly elegant bird and lattice vegetation pattern. The overlay on the main pieces in the set have a stylized K integrated into the pattern, which at first glance just looks like another decorative element.

The set is remarkably complete, it includes both the coffee and tea pot as well as the sugar and creamer. There are also 11 complete dainty trios comprised of a cup, saucer, and dessert plate. There is a twelfth plate and saucer which is unfortunately missing the cup. The set is marked Hertel Jacob Rehau Bavaria with their leaping stag motif. The coffee pot measures approximately 10 ½ tall, the tea pot is about 7 tall, the creamer is 5 ¼ tall and the sugar bowl is slightly over 4 ¾ tall.

The cups measure 3 ¾ in diameter and 2 tall, the saucers are 5 ¾ in diameter, and the plates are 6 ¾ across. The set is in excellent condition, the main pieces have no cracks or chips. One of the cups has a chip in the rim with a 3 /4 hairline running down from it, one cup has a chip with no crack, and one has a tiny fleabite. One of the saucers has a hairline running from the rim to the center of the plate.

One cup and one saucer have a brown dot on the bottom, which may indicate that they came from a different set of this pattern as the silver overlay on these two is slightly narrower and subtly less pronounced than the other pieces. The overlay appears to be silver on copper, there are some areas on the high spots of the scroll work where the copper is peeking through. The pieces will be carefully packed double boxed with bubble wrap and Styrofoam peanuts.
